Azilals were always a neutral rug, with just white and brown. But over time, after the 1970s, colors were incorporated into the rugs to make them more bright and colorful. While I love the colors, the more neutral Azilals always make my heart pitter patter a bit. This one is so sweet and subtle, with the most perfect pinks and turquoises, whimsically outlining the six diamonds coursing throughout the piece.

This rug is woven by traditional tribes from the Azilal region of Morocco, which is considered between the middle Atlas and the High Atlas mountains. These rugs were historically made for use within the home, giving the women the liberty to be creative and adaptive, and to use their weaving as an expression of self. Designs can often look like a piece of abstract art that you would find within museum walls, and each is 100% unique and the only one like this in the world.
