Turkish Anatolian rugs are woven in the region of Turkey known as Anatolia, which is also known as Asia Minor and makes up much of modern-day Turkey. This area of the world was home to many ancient civilizations, and the origins of the weavings from this region are diverse and not completely understood, though there are rugs found from this region that are thought to date to 7000 BC. These modern-day Anatolian rugs that we see today have been woven in a similar fashion, from handspun naturally dyed wool, since the early 20th century. Women and girls are the traditional weavers, and the designs and colors they use are from the integration of cultures and influences in the centuries leading to their weavings. These rugs historically had bold colors, with strong designs, though as of recent many prefer them to be faded with more muted colors.
