When I first started buying Moroccan rugs, the Azilals were my favorites. Quickly, it became clear that I wasn't the only one, and in short order, the vintage Azilals were nearly obsolete. I was nearly inconsolable, until I began to see the newly woven Azilals, which used the vintage designs as a template, with gorgeous new yarn and the impeccable weaving skills of the Berber women. I was won over, and really love these pieces, particularly because they are woven in great sizes and are amazing in structure. I always tell my customers that these rugs are meant to last, meant to be something to pass down through the generations. Additional photos available upon request, and are forthcoming.
This rug is woven by traditional tribes from the Azilal region of Morocco, which is in the High Atlas mountains. These rugs were historically made for use within the home, giving the women the liberty to be creative and adaptive, and to use their weaving as an expression of self. Designs can often look like a piece of abstract art that you would find within museum walls, and each is 100% unique and the only one like this in the world.
