When I first started to collect Azilal rug, these wild and whimsical pieces were available widely. Quickly, these rugs began to disappear, as collectors recognized their value. These days it's quite hard to locate this type of a rug in the souks of Marrakech, or the towns surrounding the Atlas mountains. I found this piece in the shop of a good friend, who had hid it away as one of his collectable pieces. I convinced him to sell it to me, and hung onto it for my own collection until recently. Don't miss this one!

This rug is woven by traditional tribes from the Azilal region of Morocco, which is considered between the middle Atlas and the High Atlas mountains. These rugs were historically made for use within the home, giving the women the liberty to be creative and adaptive, and to use their weaving as an expression of self. Designs can often look like a piece of abstract art that you would find within museum walls, and each is 100% unique and the only one like this in the world.
