Behind the Rugs

I'm Annie, and I'm located in Detroit. I'm so glad you found me! I love textiles, and strive to bring you one-of-a-kind pieces that inspire you, and make your life a little more beautiful. I travel to Turkey & Morocco and hand select each piece listed.

My foray into Moroccan rugs was complete happenstance. While wandering down a narrow street in Essaouria, Morocco I was compelled to enter a shop because of an unusual rug hanging on display. One thing led to another, and I suddenly had two beautiful and neatly packaged rugs in tow when I left. I call them my gateway rugs. A few days later, I innocently found myself in another rug shop in Marrakech, looking at a collection of rugs that was utterly stunning. I fell head over heels in love with these rugs, and walked away from this sweet little shop with the nervous excitement one has after a great first date. Is that my future husband…? My actual husband just smiled when he saw my attempt to hide the second day's packages.

Fast forward a few years, a few more trips to Morocco, and many rug purchases later, and here I am, with a deep love of Moroccan rugs, and a carefully curated collection that I adore and want to share with you. These are one-of a kind pieces; stunning works of beauty. They are functional art, which can be laid on your floor, hung on your wall, tucked in a sweet corner, and beyond. You might be wondering about my Turkish rugs too? Well that is a separate story. I first went to Turkey at age 19 and bought my first pieces then. Many moons later, I found myself back in the country, volunteering in Turkey with Syrian refugees. On a day off, I found myself inside of a bazaar in a rug shop. Eight hours and 10 cups of coffee later, I had bought a few rugs and made 200 pillows and the Turkish part of my business was born!

The vision of The Good Rug is to provide rugs that do “good” in the world. I bring these rugs to you with an excitement and joy, and the deep hope that they delight you daily, providing something that you not only love but treasure as a personal and family heirloom, and count as something good and beautiful in your life. At the same time, I want these rugs to do “good” in the world, and make the world a better place for many. All of these rugs are woven by women, and it is my hope that in purchasing them, we help provide a better life for these women, their families, and their communities.
